In the Lights of a Midnight Plow

I've been waiting for David Hickey's first collection of poetry for a few years now, and it's finally happened. In the Lights of a Midnight Plow has been published by Biblioasis. I've read and been delighted by some of the poems in various forms, and I'm looking forward to the moment (hopefully tomorrow) when I have the book in my hands and can see where the poems I've read have taken themselves and can immerse myself in some poems I've never seen.

Here's an interview David did with the Northern Poetry Review:

I think our willingness to entertain a variety of poetic sensibilities, paired with our ability to see them for what they are, enables us to advance not only our own appreciation of what we're up to as writers, but also to get the most out of what poetry has to offer.

Nice. I like the way he puts this, too: "Poetry is a great way to participate in the world." I'll have to track down his book.

Looking forward to getting my copy, too. Hope it gets lots of reviews and readers; based on the ms. version I've seen, it certainly deserves the attention.

Zach, will you be updating your log any time soon?

What happens when I lift an ear from the literary ground . . .

. . . I heard about the imminence of David's book arriving through the usual PEI channels instead of the sanctified "literary" ones -- I ran into his mother in a receiving line after a funeral yesterday.

I'm hoping to get around to cleaning up my site soonish. Right now, I'm sitting on the floor in my living room (all my furniture having been sold or given away) in the middle of piles of garbage, boxes empty and full, and other disjecta membra of my life. Rachel's moving to Vancouver in a couple of days and I'm moving out of our house to my sister's condo at month's end. After that, things will be a bit more settled and if I can remember anything about the books I've read in the last few months (and too few they've been), I'll post a few words. Just about finished Steven Pinker's _The Language Instinct_ at the moment. Anyone who cares about language should read this; chock-full of information (and refutations of popular misinformation) and entertainingly written.

Good luck with the move. That Pinker book sounds good.

Funny, I heard about Hickey for the first time tonight and then I negligently visit S&A more than a week too late for what should have been my intro...

You know, George, Islanders are always ahead of the curve. And don't think that because you live on an island now, you're an islander. Cause you're not. Nyah!

Yeah. Nyah, nyah!

But damnit, I still ain't got me mitts on a copy of the book. The Reading Well tells me they're expecting some copies to arrive any day now.

Dudes, I just want to live here and breathe the air... I have no desire to become self-righteous and whiney around the whole distinct culture sup/inf-eriority complex. (Well, except for the whole poetry thing...) NYAH. I'll order mine through Amazon since I can't find a decent independent bookstore on this pile of foggy rubble.

Dude, order it from the press!
